EVANSTON, Ill. — Cory Clark lived up to expectations during the first day of the Midlands Championships.
Clark, a four-time state champion from Southeast Polk who is redshirting at Iowa this season, advanced to the semifinals at 125 pounds Saturday. He was the only current Iowa, Iowa State or Northern Iowa wrestler to advance to the final four in any weight class.
Clark, the No.1 pre-seed who was dropped to No. 3 when official seeds were released Friday, pinned Trey Hicks of Clarion and decisioned Sean Boyle of Michigan 7-3 and 2011 all-American Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma 3-2.
Former Hawkeyes Daniel Dennis (133) and Montell Marion (149) also won quarterfinals.
The Midlands semifinals are scheduled for noon Sunday, with first-, third- and fifth-place matches set for 7 p.m. The finals will be televised on Big Ten Network.
Grand View’s Eric Thompson lost to top-seeded Jarod Trice of Central Michigan 2-1 in a 285-pound quarterfinal.
Iowa State’s Kyven Gadson lost to second-seeded Matt Wilps of Pittsburgh 4-3 at 197.
Northern Iowa’s Ryan Loder and Iowa’s Sam Brooks both lost quarterfinals at 184.
Northern Iowa scored 25.5 points through the quarterfinals, good for 16th place. Iowa State was in 23rd place with 19 points. Iowa sent only four non-varsity wrestlers.
