Damond Powell says he’s sticking with the Hawkeyes

One of the top wide receivers in the country remains a Hawkeye.

Damond Powell, whose 30-yard per catch average was the best among junior-college players last season, said Saturday that he plans to honor his verbal scholarship commitment to Iowa.

“I’m strong,” he told The Register in a phone call. “Tell everyone I’m a Hawk. I’ll be on campus in June.”

Powell met with head coach Kirk Ferentz and offensive line coach Brian Ferentz (the coach’s oldest son) Saturday.

“It was about a two-hour meeting,” Powell said. “They met my parents, and everyone hit it off real well.”

Powell said Thursday he was wavering after hearing receivers coach Erik Campbell no longer was on the staff. The big-play speedster who played at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, said he built a recruiting relationship with Campbell, and didn’t know if he could feel comfortable with another position coach.

“Coach Campbell was a big reason that I was coming to Iowa,” Powell said Thursday. “He’s not there. I’ve got to build a relationship all over again.”

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Powell, is three-star recruit according to Rivals.com.

“The meeting went real well,” Powell said. “Everything is good.”

Powell said he did not know who the new receivers coach would be.

“It doesn’t matter,” he said. “I feel I have a great relationship with the Ferentz family. They’ll hire a great coach.”

While Powell knows where he will be next fall, he didn’t know who would throw him passes.

Senior James Vandenberg took every snap last season. Jake Rudock, a redshirt freshman last season, was listed No. 2 on the depth chart. Transfer Cody Sokol and true freshman C.J. Beathard red-shirted.

Thus, the Hawkeyes open the season with a quarterback with no college experience.

“That’s all right,” said Powell, who said he had no insider information on who will be the starter. “I’m not worried about that. I’m sure that coach will have them well-prepared.”
