Reggie Roby entering Kicking Hall
Prokicker.com and the Augusta (Ga.) Sports Council will induct former Iowa punter Reggie Roby, into the American Football Kicking Hall of Fame Jan. 17.
Roby, a Waterloo native who died in 2005, was an all-American punter at the University of Iowa. In 1981, Roby set a record for average punting distance of 49.8 yards, helping Iowa to its first winning season in 20 years, and a share of the Big Ten championship.
Roby was a sixth-round NFL pick in 1983 by Miami and played for the Dolphins until 1992. He was selected as the punter for the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1980s and played in three Pro Bowls. Roby also played for the Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston/Tennessee Oilers and San Francisco 49ers.
Before his death, Roby was the marketing development director for Backfield in Motion, a non-profit organization that combines athletics and academics to inspire inner-city boys.
