VIDEO: White misses McCaffery, nails coach's college roommate with shoe
EVANSTON, Ill. – Fran McCaffery doesn’t think Aaron White was aiming for his head on purpose.
“He’s OK with me, I think,” McCaffery said.
During the second half of Iowa’s 70-50 win at Northwestern Sunday, the Wildcats’ Alex Marcotullio lost a shoe on the Hawkeyes’ end of the floor. White grabbed the shoe, in the middle of play, and flung a no-look pass.
The shoe just missed McCaffery – “I saw it out of the corner of my eye,” said the Iowa coach, who didn’t have time to react. “It went right by my chin.”
The shoe grazed the head of a female – McCaffery said she was the daughter of his wife, Margaret’s, college roommate. It gets even better.
The shoe nailed Tom Massimino directly in
the chest. Massimino, the son of legendary basketball coach Rollie Massimino, was McCaffery’s college roommate at Penn.
“I didn’t see it coming,” said Tom, whose father coached Villanova to one of the greatest upsets of all time, a victory over Georgetown in the 1985 NCAA championship game.
Tom Massimino was giving McCaffery the business about his beaning after the game outside Iowa’s locker room.
“These guys ducked,” Massimino said. “The coaches ducked and it hit me right in the chest. I said, “Coach, you guys are soft.’ ”
Asked if he knew he had almost hit McCaffery with his no-look shoe toss, White said he didn’t.
“I didn’t mean to,” White said. “I just wanted to get it out of the way.”
After the game, White apologized to Massimino for nailing him in the chest.
“I didn’t mean to,” White said as the two shook hands…and McCaffery watched in the background, laughing.
