Chris Street’s free throw record lives on
When Chris Street stepped to the free-throw line with 2 minutes 42 seconds remaining in the first half of Iowa’s Jan. 16, 1993, game at Duke, history was in his hands.
Fouled in the act of shooting by Thomas Hill, Street needed to make the first to tie Ben McGilmer’s 1969 school record of 33 consecutive made free throws. Make two, and he’d have the record to himself.
Street drained them both.
“I still remember when he hit those free throws,” Street’s mother, Patty, said. “We were going n
uts.”
Street died three days later. His school record still stands.
“Christopher’s goal was to not miss a free throw the whole Big Ten season,” Street’s father, Mike, said.
He didn’t. Street finished 66-for-74 from the line that season, including a perfect 17-for-17 in conference play.
