Former Iowa assistant football coach Erik Campbell has landed in the Canadian Football League.

Campbell, who was not retained by Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz after five seasons, has been hired by new Montreal Alouettes coach Dan Hawkins. Campbell will coach the wide receivers.

Hawkins, who was introduced at a news conference Tuesday, replaces Marc Trestman, who was hired by the Chicago Bears as their head coach to replace Lovie Smith.

Campbell came to Iowa from Michigan, where he coached wide receivers from 1995 to 2007 and was also assistant head coach from 2003 to 2007. Campbell coached wide receivers and tight ends in 2008 and 2009 at Iowa, then coached wide receivers the past three seasons.

Hawkins also hired one of Hayden Fry’s former Iowa assistants, Frank Verducci, as the Alouettes’ offensive line coach.
