Iowa wbb close season at NW

[ 0 ] March 2, 2013 |

The Iowa women’s basketball team closes the regular season at 2 p.m. today at Northwestern.

And if the Hawkeyes win, they’d turn around and play Northwestern again in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. Iowa (18-11, 7-8 Big Ten) as the seventh seed and Northwestern (13-15, 5-10) the 10th.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder knows the Hawkeyes need the win today for more than just seeding at the Big Ten Tournament, however.

Iowa beat Indiana 75-70 Thursday for just their second win over the last eight games.

It was a win that reversed a season suddenly off the rails. A win today moves Iowa to 19 victories on the season, and cements them at .500 in the conference.

Both could be significant numbers for being selected for the NCAA Tournament.

“We felt like we needed two wins this week,” Bluder siad. “But you don’t get the second one without the first one.”

Northwestern was one of the teams that sent the Hawkeyes spiraling back on Feb. 3 with a 67-65 win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Karly Roser had a buzzer-beater layup for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats have an RPI of 94, so Iowa can’t afford a bad loss on its resume.

Northwestern is holding its Senior Day today, honoring four seniors, including leading scorer Kendall Hackney (14.1 ppg).

It will also be the final regular-season game for Iowa’s seniors.

“We’re focused on one game at a time,” Iowa senior Jaime Printy said. “We’re trying not to focus on the end, and enjoy the year.”

Big Ten Tournament pairings will be released Sunday afternoon after the last game is completed.
