Des Moines-area football fans are about to be double-teamed.
Iowa is finalizing plans to hold an open practice in West Des Moines on April 20 – the same day Iowa State is scheduled to hold its annual spring scrimmage.
Hawkeye assistant coach Brian Ferentz tweeted Monday night that Iowa would be holding the open practice.
School officials said details are still being worked out, but Valley High School athletic director Brad Rose said this morning the event would take place at Valley Stadium somewhere around 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Iowa State’s spring game at Jack Trice Stadium is slated for 2 p.m.)
“It’s awesome,” Rose said. “We feel like this will be a lot of fun.”
This is new territory for Iowa but not for Division I programs in the state; Iowa State played its 1995 spring game at Des Moines East’s Williams Stadium when they Cyclones were renovating their stadium.
Among the details to be worked out at Valley Stadium, which opened in 2002 and seats 8,000: Parking, security, concessions and NCAA rules.
“To be honest with you, I don’t even want to try and estimate, depending on the weather, what size crowd we’ll have,” Rose said.
The Hawkeyes are still scheduled to have an open spring practice a week later, April 27, at Kinnick Stadium.
