McCaffery thinks Gesell will play this week
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said this morning on the Big Ten teleconference that he thinks freshman point guard Mike Gesell will play in the Big Ten Tournament this week. Iowa will face Northwestern in the first round Thursday at the United Center in Chicago.
“I think he’ll be able to play,” McCaffery said of Gesell, who missed the last four regular season games with a right foot injury. “The question is going to be how does it feel and how effective can he be? I think he’ll be pretty good.”
Gesell started the first 27 games this season and is Iowa’s third leading scorer with a 9.0 per-game average.
McCaffery said Gesell has been shooting baskets and would start running today. McCaffery also said Gesell might practice a little today and maybe a little bit tomorrow.
“Maybe we’ll wait until tomorrow, and obviously, it won’t be that long,” McCaffery said.
Iowa won three of four games without Gesell and will be seeded sixth in the Big Ten Tournament after finishing the regular season with records of 20-11 overall and 9-9 in the Big Ten. Iowa also defeated Northwestern twice in the regular season, each victory by double figures.
