Iowa ready to host NIT games, if needed

[ 0 ] March 12, 2013 |

Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said he’s not ready to count the Hawkeyes out of a NCAA Tournament bid just yet.

“I don’t know if we’ll get in or not,” Barta said Tuesday. “I clearly feel we’re one of the best 68 teams in the country.”

But if Iowa gets passed over and lands in the NIT, Barta said the University of Iowa is ready to host.

“Certainly we’re interested in hosting, the NIT knows that,” Barta said.

Iowa is somewhat limited by already hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA women’s tournament.

That will occupy Carver-Hawkeye Arena on March 24, 25 and 26.

The first three rounds of the NIT are held at the higher seeded school’s court. NIT first-round games are March 19 and 20, second-round games are March 21 to 25, and quarterfinal games are on March 26 and 27.

“Yes, we’d be able to host,” Barta said. “If we’re invited to the NIT, for sure the first two rounds we’d be able to host in Iowa City. After that, we’d have to take a look at it.”

Iowa (20-11) plays Northwestern (13-18) at 8 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. The Hawkeyes have won six of eight games to close the regular season and put themselves on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA selection show is 6 p.m. Sunday.
