Report: Lester Erb will be hired at Nevada to coach running backs/special teams

Former Iowa running backs coach Lester Erb reportedly is on the verge of landing the same position at the University of Nevada.

Football Scoop.com, citing unnamed sources, reported today that Erb would be hired as Nevada’s new running backs and special teams coach. Erb held the same position at Iowa for most of the past 13 seasons that he spent on Kirk Ferentz’s coaching staff.

Chad Hartley from the Nevada Sports Information Office would neither confirm nor deny that Erb had been hired by the school. However, Hartley said an announcement about the hiring of a new football staff member could happen as soon as this afternoon.

Brian Polian was hired as the new head football coach at Nevada in January, replacing Hall of Fame coach Chris Ault, who retired after coaching at the school for 28 seasons. Polian is the son of former NFL executive Bill Polian.

Nevada has played in a bowl game in each of the past eight seasons.

Erb is among six assistant coaches that have left the Iowa staff since late in the 2011 season.

It’s assumed that Erb and former receivers coach Erik Campbell didn’t have their contracts renewed because they both left Iowa without having others jobs. Campbell has since been hired to coach receivers for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
