Regina senior Daniel Gaffey to walk on this fall

[ 0 ] April 8, 2013 |

Regina senior Daniel Gaffey did the tour. He saw inside the weight room, he had lunch with Louis Trinca-Pasat. He got to sit down with Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

And in the end, he made the decision he had been waiting to make since Iowa football offered him a chance to walk-on two months ago.

“I’ve always wanted to be an Iowa football player,” Gaffey said. “I had been to games since I was a little kid with my dad and uncle.

“To walk down the tunnel, to watch them practice on the field, … it was pretty cool.”

Gaffey, a state champion wrestler at 220 pounds, was a two-way all-state lineman for the Class 1A champion Regals.

He said the Iowa coaches envision him as a defensive tackle. The Hawkeyes have had good success with big former wrestlers in the trenches, and Gaffey said he’s be an O-lineman, too, if that’s what they wanted.

Gaffey said he had pretty much made up his mind a week before but went on his official tour Friday and Saturday.

“I wanted to make sure they were not changing their minds,” Gaffey said.

Regina coach Marv Cook has said he expects Gaffey to be a factor at Iowa in the future.

“It’s just a matter of whether he can pack the weight on,” Cook said. “He puts 50 pounds on, he’ll be a beast. A tough, hard-nosed kid. I’ll be excited to see how it all works out.”

Gaffey said it’ll be hard shutting the door on wrestling but knew he had to pick one or the other and wanted to play for the team he grew up watching.

“Playing for the Iowa football team is an honor,” Gaffey said. “It’s going to take time and dedication.”

Gaffey is the first Regina player to join Iowa since Jacob Reisen, now a junior fullback with the Hawkeyes.
