The Green Bay Packers selected Iowa cornerback Micah Hyde with the 159th pick and Mississippi State defensive lineman Josh Boyd with the 167th pick on Saturday in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

After using four of their first five picks of the draft on offense, the Packers dedicated their two fifth-round picks to their 3-4 defensive scheme.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Hyde finished his career at Iowa with 240 tackles and eight interceptions after starting 38 consecutive games for the Hawkeyes. At 6-foot, 197 pounds, Hyde ran a 4.56 in the 40 at the combine.

“Even if he ran a 4.5 and change at the combine, (scouts) will look at film and say, ‘You know what, this guy plays fast. He plays faster than he runs a 40,’” Hyde’s agent, Jack Bechta, said. “Not all teams will think like that. But the teams that are really interested in him will do their homework and they’ll find that.”

Hyde, a Fostoria, Ohio, native, was a bright spot last season on a Hawkeye team that struggled to a 4-8 record. He ranked fourth on the team with 78 tackles (44 solo; four for losses), intercepted one pass and recovered three fumbles.

The fact that NFL teams see him as a cornerback or a safety gives him flexibility.

“Teams might be split on his best NFL position,” according to a scouting report on NFL.com.

Bechta, who represents nine former Iowa players in the NFL, added: “Micah is the kind of guy where the intangibles are off the chart. That’s actually what one scout told me.”
