Don’t look for Iowa to add this sport anytime soon

The Big Ten is adding hockey to its list of sports, but don’t expect Iowa to take to the ice anytime soon.

“The conference never tells us what sports to carry, not carry,” Hawkeye athletic director Gary Barta said. “I grew up playing hockey. I love the sport.

“The process of adding any sport in this environment, it’s really a difficult decision to make and not one I spend a lot of time considering.”

Barta went on to say that adding a sport could lead to the demise of another. Schools must also maintain a balance in the athletic opportunities for men and women.

Most of the Hawkeyes focus, Barta said, is directed at helping current teams compete at a high level.

“I certainly have some teams that aren’t yet winning championships,” Barta added. “Until I have teams clicking on all cylinders, it doesn’t make sense for me to water down my resources for the teams I already have.”

The conference features six hockey teams: Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin. The inaugural Big Ten tournament will be held March 20-22 in Minneapolis.
