Four Hawkeyes set to compete at USA Track & Field Championships

Justin Austin, Matt Byers, Allison Gattone and Kaitlyn Nelson visit Des Moines this week to compete for the opportunity to represent Team USA in a pair of international competitions.

Gattone and Nelson begin competition Thursday and Friday at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Hawkeye freshmen compete alongside side some of the best junior athletes in the country, ages 16-19, for the chance to join Team USA in Medellin, Colombia, on Aug. 23-25 at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Championships.

Nelson races in the 800 meters today at 12:30 p.m. Gattone competes in the javelin Friday at 12 p.m.

Austin and Byers compete Saturday and Sunday for the chance to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, on Aug. 10-18. Austin, an All-American in the 200 meters at the NCAA Championships, races in the same event Saturday at 2:40 p.m. Byers, a three-time Big Ten champion, competes in the javelin Sunday at 2 p.m.

All times are central, and each event is contested at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
