IOWA CITY, Ia. – Texan Nic Shimonek, Iowa’s incoming quarterback recruit, created a buzz and gained a lot of new Twitter followers after he tweeted this on June 25: “Sokol, Rudock and Beathard, I’m gunning for y’all’s spot. Don’t take anything lightly.”
Cody Sokol, Jake Rudock and C.J. Beathard are all competing for Iowa’s starting quarterback position.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said he was unaware of Shimonek’s Twitter challenge.
“I like his confidence,” Ferentz said. “I’d also say it’s a position that’s really hard for a first-year player.”
All three returning quarterbacks shared the same line on the depth chart after spring practice, and will start competition again when practice starts the first week of August.
“The three guys we have here, we feel like all of them have some really good attributes and it will be a little different style of attack with all three of them,” Ferentz said. “I think all three are capable of becoming real good college quarterbacks. I think it’s a real healthy situation. It’s not, “Oh, crap, do we have one?’ We’ll let it play out.”
