Hawkeyes add N.Y. state champion

[ 0 ] July 6, 2013 |

The Iowa wrestling team has added New York state champion Burke Paddock to its 2014 recruiting class.

Paddock said he said yes when Iowa made an offer on his visit last weekend.

“I’ve always liked their style,” Paddock said. “It matches up with exactly how I wrestle.”

He is ranked as the No. 39 recruit in the country by Intermat and will wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds for the Hawkeyes.

“I’ve been lifting a lot and I think I still have another year, and maybe a redshirt year, too,” Paddock said.

Paddock went 54-1 with 40 pins during his junior season, and won his first state title in dominant fashion, pinning his way through the bracket at 160 pounds at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament.

Burke Paddock, from Warsaw High School, is the third Paddock brother to win a state title. Ian Paddock wrestles for Ohio State. His other brother Paul wrestled for Edinboro.

He said his brothers told him to trust his instinct when picking a wrestling program.

“They said to do what feels right in your gut,” Paddock said. “For Paul, Edinboro was his first visit, and that’s what he went with.”
