Ben Niemann, a linebacker from Sycamore, Ill., and the son of Northern Illinois defensive coordinator Jay Niemann, switched his verbal commitment Saturday from NIU to Iowa.
Reached through social media, Niemann, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver in high school, confirmed the switch, but said with the family situation he preferred not to do interviews about his decision “at this time.”
Niemann is a 2-star receiver who also had offers from Eastern Michigan and Illinois State. The senior-to-be committed to NIU last October, and was recruited by Iowa to play linebacker.
His father, Jay Niemann, is a native of Avoca and an Iowa State graduate and has been the head coach at Simpson College, and assistant coach at Drake and Northern Iowa.
According to the Sycamore Daily Chronicle, Jay Niemann is friends with Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker.
Niemann is the thought to be the 12th player to commit to Iowa 2014 class.
