Former Iowa diver Deidre Freeman advanced to the finals in the women’s 1-meter springboard at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona.

Freeman, Grinnell native, will compete in Tuesday’s final after scoring 263 points for fifth place in the preliminaries. She was in 12th after the second round, then turned in the second-best score in Round Three — 54.60 points on a forward 2 1/2 pike — to lift her to sixth in the standings. She followed with 52.80 points on an inward 1 1/2 pike in Round Four that moved her up to fifth, and she held on to that spot after the final round.

Freeman, who studied abroad in Spain in 2009, was an All-American with the Hawkeyes in 2010.
