[ 0 ] July 24, 2013 |

Iowa Vs. Iowa State Tailgating

Bob Updegraff of Des Moines, whose Cy-Hawk tag has become one of the most popular monikers in Iowa sports history, died of cancer Wednesday morning.

He was 66.

“The trophy didn’t last, but the tag did,” said Bob Uetz, who helped originate the initial trophy given to the annual Iowa-Iowa State football game winner. “We were standing around, looking at the designs.

“The one we happened to be looking at had Cy the Cyclone on one side, Herky on the other, and all of a sudden, Bob (Updegraff) said, ‘It’s a Cy-Hawk.’ ”

Funeral services are pending.
