ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Ricky Stanzi brings a been-there-done-that perspective to Iowa’s current quarterback competition.
Jake Rudock, Cody Sokol and C.J. Beathard are vying for the starting job, much like the Stanzi-Jake Christensen duel in 2008.
“The best thing you can do is just stick with it,” Stanzi said. “Because it’s such a growing process, from high school to college. Even physically, the difference that it takes to get up to speed. To be able to move your legs as fast as the play wants to go.”
Stanzi emerged as the starter in ’08 and held the position through 2010.
“I had a lot of time where I needed to develop — my body, my mind,” he said. “I hadn’t really been exposed to that kind of speed and that kind of offense.
“It took a lot of time just to get those things — where I felt comfortable to step out there, command the huddle, go to the line and make plays.”
Stanzi eventually led Iowa to three bowl victories.
“It’s a one-day-at-a-time thing,” he said. “You’ve got to stick with it. Every day there is a conscious effort to just put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.
“You’re going to have bad days. You’re going to have highs and lows. But if you keep going forward, it will work itself out.”
