Men’s hoops finishes European trip with convincing win

FOS-SUR-MER, France – The Iowa men’s basketball team had four players reach double figures as the Hawkeyes erased a narrow halftime deficit Tuesday and scurried to a 92-78 victory over Fos-Ouest Basket to close the team’s European trip.

Peter Jok led all scorers with 17 points. Melsahn Basabe registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron White added 16 for the Hawkeyes, and Devyn Marble had a balanced game with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Fos-Ouest Basket, down by as many as a dozen points early, used a 16-1 spurt to turn a 10-point second-quarter deficit into a 43-38 lead entering the final minute of the first half. Iowa closed to within 45-43 by intermission and scored the first nine points after halftime to seize the lead for good.

The Hawkeyes closed the game on a 23-13 run, buoyed by 12 of White’s coming in the final 20 minutes.

Iowa made 54 percent of its shots (35-of-64) overall and was an impressive 17-of-26 (65 percent) from the floor in the first half.

Tuesday’s victory was an immediate bounce-back from the Hawkeyes’ only loss on the trip, an 84-82 setback Monday to Hyeres-Toulon after former Iowa player Pierre Pierce hit the game-winning shot in overtime. Iowa finished the European tour at 5-1 and is scheduled to return to the U.S. on Thursday.

“This trip has been beneficial in so many ways,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said in a news release.  “The competition was good; we had to fight and compete, and came together as a group.”
