Ten days before the season opener, Michigan announced Wednesday morning that wide receiver Amara Darboh will miss the season with a foot injury that will require surgery.

Darboh, a former standout at West Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School, was expected to be Michigan’s No. 2 receiver and a large target opposite Jeremy Gallon this season.

After hinting Tuesday that Darboh might be out a long time, after getting injured in Saturday’s scrimmage, Wolverines coach Brady Hoke confirmed it in a released statement Wednesday.

“I love Amara, and just hate it for him, how hard he worked through the off-season and fall camp to earn a starting role,” Hoke said. “We’ll rally around him like a family does and help him get through this difficult time.”

Darboh did not catch a pass while playing primarily on special teams as a freshman, but the 6-foot-2, 212-pound wideout was thought to be a big contributor this year.

Michigan plays at Iowa on Nov. 23.
