Coming Sunday video: Hawkeye legend Randy Duncan

[ 0 ] August 23, 2013 |

Former Iowa quarterback Randy Duncan was named runner-up for the 1958 Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the best player in college football.

Duncan, a Des Moines attorney, later helped Iowa beat Cal 38-12 in the 1959 Rose Bowl — the last Hawkeye victory in the famed bowl. The Green Bay Packers selected Duncan as the first player overall in the NFL Draft, though he opted to play for the Canadian Football League’s British Columbia Lions.

After three professional seasons — two with the Lions, one with the American Football League’s Dallas Texans — the two-sports Des Moines Roosevelt star stepped away from football to focus on family and practicing law.

Duncan, 76, is fighting brain cancer diagnosed in February 2012.

This week, the Des Moines Sunday Register examines the life and legacy of Duncan, one of the talented and accomplished athletes in state history.
