Mr. Optimist, Mr. Pessimist take a swing at Iowa’s easy victory

[ 0 ] September 21, 2013 |

Mr. Optimist: Today’s victory improved Iowa’s record to 20-4 against teams from the Mid-American Conference.

Mr. Pessimist: It also improved Iowa’s record to 1-2 against Western Michigan, so let’s cancel the celebration.

Mr. Optimist: The Iowa defense has not allowed a rushing touchdown in four games this season and has not allowed a first-half touchdown in the last three games.

Mr. Pessimist: The Iowa defense must exert so much energy doing that to where there is none left to sack the quarterback. Iowa only has two sacks in four games this season, and just 15 in the last 16 games dating to the start of last season.

Mr. Optimist: Iowa is now halfway to meeting the bowl requirement of six victories.

Mr. Pessimist: Too bad Iowa doesn’t have any more MAC teams or a rematch with Iowa State to help complete the quest to become bowl eligible.

Mr. Optimist: This victory is significant in a number of ways, including marking the 39th time in the last 41 seasons that Iowa has won at least three games in a season.

Mr. Pessimist: Cavemen had higher standards.

Mr. Optimist: Veteran radio announcer Bob Brooks is a treasure, a presence that we’ll never see again in the press box.

Mr. Pessimist: You’d think by now Iowa would have arranged for somebody to carry his giant tape recorder at post-game press conferences.

Mr. Optimist: Iowa receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley became just the third player in Big Ten history to return two punts for touchdowns in a single game.

Mr. Pessimist: The Broncos acted on special teams as if they weren’t allowed to touch Martin-Manley until he was 20 yards down field.

Mr. Optimist: A rebuilding Minnesota squad is the ideal opponent for Iowa to begin conference play.

Mr. Pessimist: Need I remind you that a rebuilding Minnesota squad defeated Iowa in each of the last two games at TCF Bank Stadium?
