Flags down: Hawkeyes limit penalties since Missouri State win

IOWA CITY, Ia. After getting flagged for 11 penalties and 100 yards in the second game of the season against Missouri State, Iowa’s football team collectively decided to do something about that.

“After the game we decided we wanted to be more of a disciplined team,” center Austin Blythe said. “We thought about how we wanted to be talked about in meetings, as other teams were talking about us. We didn’t want to be a team that is targeted as an undisciplined, penalized team. So that’s something we talked about after that game, and something we’ve really focused on cleaning up.”

In the three games since Missouri State, Iowa has been penalized a total of 10 times 90 yards. That includes just one penalty against Minnesota last week and three against Iowa State on Sept. 14.

“In general terms, penalties are usually a lack of ability or a lack of concentration and technique,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “The ability ones, you can’t do anything about and usually concentration and technique are tied together.”

The 11 penalties came in Iowa’s most underachieving performance of the season, a 28-14 victory over Missouri State.

“I would say that one game just equated to where we were as a team at that point and the score kind of tied in with everything else about the game,” Ferentz said. “That’s about where we were that day, our second week of the year.”
