Big-play Damond Powell still a work in progress

IOWA CITY, Ia. – When it comes to Iowa receiver Damond Powell, fans want more, more, more.

Powell’s speed and big-play capabilities have made him a favorite among Hawkeye followers. But he just arrived on campus in August and is still adapting to offensive coordinator Greg Davis’ scheme.

“I think it will be more and more as we go along,” Davis said of Powell’s playing time. “Obviously, Damond is a special guy, but he was not here in the spring and he was not here in the summer.

“And so, it’s been a process.”

Powell is averaging 37.5 yards on six catches, with two touchdowns.

“Obviously, we didn’t have to teach him how to run fast,” Davis said. “He brought that with him.

“The other day, he actually caught a ball that wasn’t 40 yards down the field. That was encouraging.”

So, how many snaps will he get?

“I don’t know that there is a magic number,” Davis said. “But we are aware that he is a guy who we have to keep bringing on. There’s no question.”
