Top 35 prospect commits to Iowa wrestling

[ 0 ] October 8, 2013 |

Seth Gross kept his eyes on the lightweight battles Saturday morning inside the Iowa wrestling room.

The tussles between former prized recruits reminded the three-time Fargo champion how he developed into a coveted prospect for Minnesota high school power Apple Valley.

Gross committed to the Hawkeyes on Tuesday when he picked Iowa over Minnesota, Oklahoma State and North Carolina. The No. 33 overall prospect in InterMat’s Class of 2014 rankings projects as a 133- or 141-pounder in college, and he said the idea of teaming up with Cory Clark and Thomas Gilman and training in the same room as Matt McDonough and Tony Ramos was one of the key factors in his decision.

“It’s made me a lot better (in high school) going into practice knowing you’re not going to beat on everybody and you’re going to get whipped on yourself,” Gross said. “Being able to see what other guys do to score on you and fix that … it’s awesome having great partners who will make you better every single day.”

Gross is believed to be the second wrestler to commit to Iowa’s 2014 class. He joins New York state champion Burke Paddock, who committed to Iowa in July and projects at 165 or 174 in college.

The newest Hawkeye said he grew up following the program in his backyard, but Gross said his style resembles one of Iowa’s current stars.

“I liked watching the Gophers,” Gross said. “My favorite wrestler to watch is probably Derek St. John. I love watching him, I love his style.”
