IOWA CITY, Ia. – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz drew a few raised eyebrows when he said, at two different press conferences last week, he might never again set up for a punt return.
His comments were a reaction to Michigan State’s successful fake punt – the sixth time since 2010 a Hawkeye opponent has pulled off such a play.
“Boy, that got quite a national response,” Ferentz said Tuesday. “Better watch what I say. Maybe I should make something up.”
Ferentz didn’t exactly back off his no-return stance, however.
“I’m not real interested in seeing another fake,” he said. “So whatever it takes to stop the fake, we’ll do that.
“I went home that night and saw one in the Northwestern-Ohio State game, too. Can’t get away from it.”
