Former Hawkeye baseball player writes book about historic night

Playing all nine positions in a game put Iowan Justin Toole in a unique position — as an author.

The Council Bluffs native, former Hawkeye player and current minor-leaguer has added “writer” to his resume after penning a book about the historic game two years ago.

Toole’s book, titled “9 in 9: Nine Life Lessons Learned from Playing Nine Positions in One Nine Inning Baseball Game,” chronicles his memorable night in baseball.

“If you would have told me the night before I played that game that all this stuff would happen after, I would have thought you were crazy,” Toole said.

The 27-year-old made headlines throughout baseball when he pitched, caught and played the three outfield positions and four infield spots during a minor-league game for the Carolina Mudcats on Aug. 25, 2012.

He documented the night in a 128-page paperback book. Each chapter is devoted to an inning from the game and coincides with nine life lessons.

The book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the game and includes insights from Toole about what he’s learned from his experiences playing baseball.

“Although it’s about the game, it’s more about the different lessons, sports psychology lessons, and different things that I wanted to pass along to people reading it to try to help inspire them to either chase their dreams, follow their dreams, or continue on a path,” Toole said.

Toole has spent his entire career in the minor leagues with the Indians.

Toole said he spent close to nine months working on the book, which recently became available for purchase.

“Hopefully people read it and it kind of motivates them to follow their dreams,” Toole said.

Toole hit .253 with 11 doubles and 32 RBIs in 97 games between triple-A Columbus, double-A Akron and Class A Carolina last season.

One of his dreams has not changed: play in the major leagues one day.

“If you have a dream or have something that you’ve always wanted to do, chase that and go do it,” Toole said.

The book is available for purchase on various websites including booklocker.com.
