IOWA CITY, Ia. – Mike Meyer arrived at Iowa without a scholarship. He could depart as the school’s second all-time leading scorer.

The senior kicker from Dubuque needs five points Saturday against Northwestern to pass Rob Houghtlin for the No. 2 spot.

“Mike’s like a lot of our seniors, he’s just a tremendous young guy,” coach Kirk Ferentz said. “Very steady in everything he does.  You don’t worry about him in the classroom.  You don’t worry about him, basically, in any regards.”

Meyer has scored 286 points. Houghtlin, the Hawkeyes’ kicker from 1985-87, finished with 290.

Nate Kaeding, a kicker from 2000-03, is Iowa’s most prolific scorer, with 373 points.

Meyer and Houghtlin are currently tied with 54 career field goals each.

“He’s had some low moments, like most players do,” Ferentz said of Meyer. “It’s a process for him.

“He’s playing with a lot of confidence right now.  That’s something he’s earned the right to.  It’s just another good story.”

Meyer has made 54-of-70 career field goals and has hit 105 consecutive point-after kicks.
