Big Ten buzz: Iowa’s three losses are to teams now 23-1

[ 0 ] October 30, 2013 |

  • The three teams to defeat Iowa so far this season, Northern Illinois, Michigan State and Ohio State, are a combined 23-1.
  • Iowa’s next Big Ten victory will be the 300th in school history.
  • Ohio State’s 20 consecutive victories are two short of the school’s all-time record established from 1967 to 1969. Michigan holds the conference record of 29 straight from 1901 to 1903.
  • Michigan State’s Connor Cook completed 15-of-16 passes against Illinois last week. That .938 completion percentage ranks seventh best in Big Ten history.
  • Quarterback Braxton Miller has been a part of 61 touchdowns in his Ohio State career, third most in program history.
  • Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock is 29-of-48 for 378 yards and three touchdowns in two trophy games this season, victories over Iowa State (Cy-Hawk) and Minnesota (Floyd of Rosdale). Iowa and Wisconsin play for the Heartland Trophy on Saturday.

The Wolverines’ Fitzgerald Toussaint added some flavor this week, referring to the Spartans as a “little brother. And, you know, little brother wants to prove themselves and try to beat up the big brother one day.” Little brother can be the big dog with a home victory.

With Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin not on the schedule, Michigan State can about punch its ticket to Indianapolis with a win. The Spartans lead the Legends Division at 4-0, and have games at Nebraska and Northwestern and a home game against Minnesota remaining. Michigan, 2-1, hosts Nebraska and travels to Northwestern and Iowa before returning home to face Ohio State.
