Former Iowa football player Earl Douthitt, a first-team all-Big Ten Conference pick in 1974, was killed Tuesday in Youngstown, Ohio, while doing yard work.
Douthitt, 61, was hit by a van as he was raking leaves, the Youngstown News reported.
Douthitt is Iowa’s single-season and career record-holder for kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage. The defensive back was captain of the 1974 Hawkeye team and later played for the Chicago Bears in the NFL.
Police were trying to figure out why the driver lost control of the van, the newspaper reported. Alcohol was not a factor.
