Kirk Ferentz doesn’t concern himself with bowl projections

IOWA CITY, Ia. – Even a tunnel-vision guy like Kirk Ferentz occasionally glances at college football bowl projections.

But the Iowa coach doesn’t get as wrapped up in speculation about where the Hawkeyes might end up.

“I read all that stuff last week and put it down,” Ferentz said. “Clearly, nobody knows anything about anything right now.”

Most of the sporting world is focused on who might land in the Bowl Championship Series title game. Ferentz is taking wait-and-see approach.

“The landscape looks different now than it did a week ago,” he said. “It’ll probably keep changing. That’s my guess, especially at the top.”

Alabama and Florida State are the current front-runners, but Baylor and Ohio State also remain in contention.

“Early November is the panic season,” Ferentz said. “We’ve got five or six teams who should be in the championship game.

“It’s amazing how that number gets paired down as things go along.”

And what about Iowa’s postseason destination?

“Bowls are the same way,” Ferentz concluded. “We’re not too worried about that. We’ve got a real tough opponent this week.”

The Hawkeyes (6-4) can bolster their status with a win over Michigan (7-3) at Kinnick Stadium, 11 a.m. Saturday.
