Hawkeyes trail LSU: What Iowa must do to rally

[ 0 ] January 1, 2014 |

TAMPA, Fla. – It doesn’t matter who LSU’s quarterback is, if Iowa keeps coughing up the football.

An interception and muffed punt helped the Tigers seize control of today’s Outback Bowl in the second quarter.

The interception came when Hawkeye quarterback Jake Rudock underthrew Damond Powell on a deep ball when Powell had gotten behind the LSU defense. Rudock’s throw was picked off at the LSU 7.

After Iowa’s defense forced a punt, Kevonte Martin-Manley bobbled the return, which eventually led to a 14-yard touchdown run my Jeremy Hill, and 14-0 lead for LSU.

Rudock had two other passes in the first half that were nearly picked off.

LSU marched 77 yards on the game’s opening possession, taking a 7-0 lead on Anthony Jennings’ 2-yard run.

Jennings was making his first career start, but didn’t attempt a pass until the Tigers’ 13th play from scrimmage.

Hill has 102 rushing yards on 16 carries, so far.

THREE KEYS TO THE SECOND HALF

–Better pass protection. The LSU defense is closing in on quarterback Jake Rudock. During the regular season, Rudock might head up field for 5 or 6 yards. The Tigers are chasing him down at the line of scrimmage.

–Run crossing routes, set picks for receivers. Iowa’s wideouts can’t get any separation. So, offensive coordinator Greg Davis might have to create some. Underneath routes are open, but those will dry up closer to the goal line.

–Attack Anthony Jennings. I’m guessing there is a reason LSU coach Les Miles waited until the 13th play to let Jennings throw the ball. And besides, the only way Iowa will get back into this game is with a turnover or some other quick strike.
