Hoosiers stun Hawks with 86-84 upset win

[ 0 ] January 2, 2014 |

The 22nd-ranked Iowa women’s basketball team fell to unranked Indiana 86-84 Thursday in Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.

The Hawkeyes (12-3, 0-1 Big Ten) outscored Indiana 8-3 in the final 33 seconds, but a large lead by the Hoosiers early in the second half proved to be insurmountable. Indiana led by as many as 12 and were up by seven with just a minute remaining in the contest.

Thursday’s  Box Score

“We shouldn’t be getting ourselves down 12 points. We came out with a very lackluster approach to this game,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. “When the desperate times came, we finally started playing like we’re capable of playing. We can’t wait for desperation like that — we have to play like that the entire game.”

Four Hawkeyes posted double figures in scoring. Samantha Logic led all scorers with 25 points and also pulled down 12 rebounds. Bethany Doolittle notched 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting, Ally Disterhoft added 13, and Kali Peschel chipped in 10. The Black and Gold shot 50 percent overall, but just 17.6 percent from 3-point range (3-of-17).

Larryn Brooks led Indiana with 20 points and nine assists to give the Hoosiers (14,0, 1-0) a victory in the first game of Big Ten Conference play. Brooks went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final minute to help seal the win. Tabith Gerardot recorded a double-double for the Hoosiers with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana had more shot attempts, rebounds, assists and steals than Iowa.

“We really didn’t have it right from the start, and I don’t know why,” Bluder said. “Our pre-game prep was good. For some reason we didn’t come out and play with that same energy on the defensive end.”
