Iowa’s hot offense to face MSU’s top defense

[ 0 ] January 15, 2014 |

The Iowa women’s basketball team is the only team in the Big Ten to have five players averaging in double figures in scoring.

Iowa is also the only team to have three players average 14 or more points.

At 81.7 points per game, the Hawkeyes have flashed quite a bit of offensive prowess this season. That scoring output ranks first in the conference and 18th nationally. Iowa (14-4, 2-2 Big Ten) will attempt to continue that trend as it takes on Michigan State (11-5, 3-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“When we’re shooting well, it’s hard to beat us,” Iowa’s Samantha Logic said.

The Spartans — one of the nation’s best defensive teams, allowing 64 points per game — are the only remaining team in the Big Ten that is unbeaten.

Iowa could be at the top of the Big Ten standings by this week’s end as coach Lisa Bluder’s squad prepares for an important pair of games. The Hawkeyes can close within a half-game of the conference lead with a win over Michigan State and then help their cause even further Sunday at Ohio State.

Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan and Indiana are also in the mix at the top of the league right now.

“We’re right where we want to be,” Bluder said. “I don’t consider Penn State (on Jan. 5) a bad loss. We have to focus one game at a time. The Michigan State game would put us right back in the hunt.”

Logic (14.7 points per game), Melissa Dixon (14.6), Bethany Doolittle (14.2), Ally Disterhoft (12), and Theairra Taylor (10.6) are at the top of the stat sheet for the Hawkeyes.

They will need that offensive production Thursday. The Spartans have allowed just 56, 57, and 72 points in their first three Big Ten games.

Logic didn’t deny the importance of a win over the Green and White.

“We only get them once, so we’re lucky to have them on our home floor,” Logic said. “They have a little bit of everything.

Any team can (win on) any given day. That’s how awesome this conference is, that’s how tough it is. We’re going to have to play well. When they’re clicking on all cylinders, you have to do that.”
