St. John suffers first loss of the season

LINCOLN, Neb. – Derek St. John, Iowa’s top-ranked 157-pounder, suffered his first loss of the season Saturday, losing 9-7 to Nebraska’s James Green.

The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Conference wrestling dual 22-9 against the No. 8 Cornhuskers.

Green, ranked third at 157, stayed undefeated at 22-0. St. John fell to 20-1.

Green was the second top-three foe St. John faced in eight days. He topped Oklahoma State No. 2 Alex Dieringer 2-1 on Jan. 10.

St. John fell to 2-2 against Green. He won the first two meetings by 6-4 scores, and lost 5-4 in the 2013 Big Ten semifinals.

St. John had won 27 straight matches since their last meeting, including the 2013 NCAA championship.

Iowa’s Thomas Gilman, ranked fifth at 125, beat No. 10 Tim Lambert 2-1 with riding time providing the decisive point. It was the first meeting between the two wrestlers.

No. 6 Mike Evans lost 7-3 to Nebraska’s No. 4 Robert Kokesh at 174. Evans fell to 3-2 all-time against Kokesh. He won the first three meetings before falling 3-2 at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

Second-ranked Tony Ramos gave Iowa four team points at 133, dropping Shawn Nagel by major decision 15-4.
