Hawkeye women cruise past Gophers

[ 0 ] January 29, 2014 |

A 20-2 run midway through the second half spurred the Iowa women’s basketball team to a big lead that turned insurmountable in a 64-56 win over Minnesota on Wednesday night in Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

Iowa (17-5, 5-3 Big Ten) has won five of its last six games since starting Big Ten play 0-2.

The Hawkeyes trailed the Gophers (13-9, 2-6) 34-31 with 15:37 remaining, but Ally Disterhoft hit a 3-pointer to tie the score, followed by a Bethany Doolittle jumper to go up two points, and coach Lisa Bluder’s squad never looked back.

“Such a great team performance,” Bluder said. “We were one point away from having five players in double figures. I love the balance of our basketball team.”

Disterhoft led Iowa with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Samantha Logic nearly recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Melissa Dixon added 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Wednesday night marked the 20th straight game Bluder’s bunch had at least three players reach double figures in scoring.

Iowa held Minnesota’s Rachel Banham — who entered the contest averaging 22.8 points per game — to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.

“We talked about everybody being aware of where (Banham) is,” Bluder said. “If we’re in zone, everybody knows where she is. If we’re in player (defense), someone helps (Logic). … I think Rachel got a little bit frustrated out there.”

Iowa returns to its home court at 2 p.m. Saturday against Nebraska.
