Clark makes strong return to wrestling lineup

[ 0 ] January 31, 2014 |

EVANSTON, Ill. — Freshman Cory Clark made a strong return to the Iowa wrestling lineup Friday, beating Northwestern’s Garrison White by major decision 10-1.

Iowa won the dual 31-6.

Clark has battled weight-management issues and lost his starting spot at 125 pounds for a month. Thomas Gilman struggled in his last couple of bouts, however, opening the door for Clark’s return.

Clark won four state championships at Southeast Polk before redshirting last season. He and Gilman are considered two of the top 125-pounders in the nation, and coach Tom Brands is giving both wrestlers chances to show what they can do.

Iowa’s No. 2 Tony Ramos pinned Dominick Malone in 5:24 at 133. Third-ranked Hawkeye Derek St. John rebounded from two straight losses to beat Benjamin Sullivan 8-3 at 157. Nick Moore, No. 5 at 165, beat Northwestern’s No. 7 Pierce Harger 7-3.

Northwestern’s No. 5 Jason Tsirtsis beat Brody Grothus 5-2 at 149. Top-ranked Northwestern heavyweight Michael McMullan decisioned No. 4 Bobby Telford 3-1 in overtime.
