Lineman recruit prepares to learn playbook, get stronger

Since verbally committing to the University of Iowa football program eight months ago, Indianola senior lineman Keegan Render can finally exhale a sigh of accomplishment and relief — even with a broken left foot.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound elite all-state selection signed his national letter of intent with the Hawkeyes Wednesday morning.

“It’s kind of a celebration to finally be a part of their team officially,” Render said.

Render plans to redshirt his freshman year, then compete for different spots on the line after a season of learning the playbook and getting stronger.

“I know from speaking with their coaching staff that they don’t expect Keegan to come in and play in their first two years,” Indianola football coach Eric Kluver said. “He’s going to be a guy that’s going to need to develop, learn the system, get bigger, faster and stronger then hopefully work himself into a starting role.”

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz visited Render in Indianola last week, telling his new player the staff couldn’t wait to get Render on campus in Iowa City.

About the foot, which was injured a week prior to the start of basketball season, Render said Ferentz “didn’t really care.”

“He’s like, ‘It happens,’” Render said. “He wanted me to play basketball and do track to enjoy my senior year.”
