Running back from Missouri rounds out recruiting class

[ 0 ] February 6, 2014 |

Apparently, Markel Smith wasn’t intercepted by dog sleds.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back from St. Louis, Mo., tweeted that he signed a letter of intent to join the Iowa football program today. He was unable to sign Wednesday because he was snowed in at a religious retreat.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who didn’t mention Smith by name Wednesday, said he expected another signee today.

“So hopefully no dog sleds intercept him and convince him to go somewhere else, but I think hopefully that will be our 19th signee,” Ferentz said.

Smith, who attended St. John Vianney in St. Louis, picked the Hawkeyes over Missouri, Mississippi, Tulsa and Illinois.

Smith, a three-star recruit, set a Missouri state high school record by rushing for 541 yards in a game against Washington on Oct. 4.
