Hawkeye wrestlers to salute seniors vs. Michigan

[ 0 ] February 8, 2014 |

Two teams ranked in the top 25.

Eight out of the 10 weight classes featuring ranked matchups.

But it’s six specific individuals who will stand out the most Sunday as the Iowa wrestling team takes on Michigan in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Senior Day. At least in coach Tom Brands’ mind. No. 3 Iowa will highlight veterans Joe DuCharme, Tomas Lira, Ethen Lofthouse, Tony Ramos, Derek St. John and Nick Trizzino after the dual meet.

“They’ve been here for 4.5 years, going on five years,” Brands said. “There is a lot of water under the dam for them and good memories from my point of view. I am kind of smiling right now on all of them. These aren’t things you get emotional about because you feel they’re in a good place to go forward with the rest of their lives as young motivated men who are going to aspire.”

The six seniors have combined for 90 wins to just 10 losses.

Tony Ramos is 33-0 at Iowa, and also was undefeated in high school, meaning a victory Sunday would be eight straight years with no losses at home between the collegiate and prep level. Ramos is 3-2 this season against ranked opponents at 133 pounds. A win also will make Ramos the first grappler to finish undefeated at Carver-Hawkeye since Brent Metcalf, who was 25-0.

A key bout also will take place at heavyweight as No. 2 Adam Coon will take the mat for Michigan and Bobby Telford — ranked third in the nation — wrestles for the Hawkeyes.

In addition to Ramos, Lofthouse and St. John will start as seniors for Iowa on Sunday.

“They have been household names,” Brands said of his senior starting trio. “Now let’s finish strong.”
