The rankings-obsessed football fan was given another future tool for debate on Thursday.

An additional major college football poll, the Grantland Rice Super 16, will debut for the 2014 season as speculation and deliberation will take on new meaning with the advent of a four-team college football playoff.

The poll, created in concert by the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation, will be released on Sundays throughout the season, culminating with a final poll on Dec. 7, the day after power-conference championship games.

The new ranking option will not have any direct influence on the College Football Playoff, which will select its teams via a 13-member committee announced last October.

The decision to conduct the new poll was made in December and January by the boards of both organizations following the 2013 season. The poll will consist of 36 voters (26 from the FWAA and 10 from the NFF) and will include veteran writers and college football hall of fame members. The names and affiliations of the voters will be released to the general public in early summer, and their votes will be made public each week during the season, the organizations said in a news release.

“We are extremely excited to announce this first poll in conjunction with the National Football Foundation at a time when major college football is ushering in a new era,” FWAA president Kirk Bohls said in the release. “I can’t think of a better partner in jointly producing the ‘Grantland Rice Super 16’ poll of the best teams in the nation.”
