INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Iowa basketball players warmed up for Thursday’s Big Ten Tournament game against Northwestern with T-shirts supporting 13-year-old Patrick McCaffery, son of Hawkeye coach Fran McCaffery.
Doctors discovered a tumor on Patrick’s thyroid. A seventh grader, Patrick will have surgery Wednesday at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to remove the mass. Tests will then determine whether the mass is benign or malignant.
The Iowa players wore white T-shirts that read “P-Mac” on the front, and “#teampat’ on the back, along with the number 22. That is Patrick’s favorite number.
Family members of the Iowa players also wore the T-shirts.
The news of Patrick’s condition was released this week during a news conference by Fran McCaffery, who was mostly void of emotion during his Tuesday meeting with reporters.
