Hawkeye QB will transfer to Louisiana Tech

Cody Sokol, who found himself third in a three-way battle to become Iowa’s quarterback last fall, has transferred to Louisiana Tech.

Rivals.com reported the transfer Thursday.  The 6-foot-2, 215-pound native of Phoenix did not take an official snap for the Hawkeyes after arriving from Scottsdale Community College. He red-shirted in the 2012 season.

Sokol told the Louisiana Tech fan website, BleedTechBlue, that he didn’t see a future for him in Iowa City after a fall that saw Jake Rudock entrench himself as a starter, with C.J. Beathard as the solid No. 2 option.

“Things didn’t go as well as I wanted them to, so I ended up getting put down into the third spot,” Sokol said. “After that, I just wanted to go play somewhere. The (Iowa) coaches and I are pretty close, and they understood and said that we have three great quarterbacks that could probably start anywhere else in the nation, too. They were fine with me leaving and actually helped me out.”

Sokol will have one year of eligibility at Louisiana Tech, which was looking for immediate help at quarterback after a 4-8 season. BleedTechBlue said Sokol is on track to graduate from Iowa in May.
