Patrick McCaffery was released from University Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City on Thursday, his 14th birthday, and is resting at home after having surgery to remove a tumor on his thyroid.

The son of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery had the surgery Wednesday morning. Tests are being done to determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant.

Fran McCaffery said that test results are scheduled to come back Monday, but the family may find out as soon as Friday.

The coach was in Iowa City for Patrick’s surgery Wednesday, then flew to Dayton, Ohio, and coached his team in a first-round NCAA Tournament overtime loss to Tennessee.

“It was a day that, needless to say, was very difficult,” Fran McCaffery said.
