Not even an elbow to the face can slow down Logic

[ 0 ] March 23, 2014 |

Another game, another near triple double for Samantha Logic.

The junior guard scored 11 points and had 10 assists and nine rebounds in 36 minutes in the Iowa women basketball team’s 87-65 win over Marist on Sunday night. She shot 5-of-7, and 1-of-2 from 3-point range. The performance is her 24th career double double.

And not even an elbow to the face slowed her down. Well, maybe a little. But after nearly losing a tooth following an inadvertent elbow to the face from a Marist defender, Logic remained the engine that ran the Iowa offense.

Logic noted the team’s attention to detail following the last time Iowa played, a loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament championship two weeks ago.

“After a loss like that, we were pretty focused,” Logic said. “The last two weeks we’ve been focusing on ourselves, especially the first week, week and a half. Then when you find out who you’re playing, you focus on them.

“We had a great focus and energy, I think, for two weeks without having a game, which is kind of tough to sustain.”

SCHIMMEL WATCH: One of the most decorated players in Louisville women’s basketball history, Shoni Schimmel, posted a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds in the Cardinals’ 88-42 thrashing of Idaho.

More known for her scoring ability, Schimmel made an impression on the boards especially.

“That’s how you survive: rebounding, defending, taking care of the ball. We did a great job of that,” Schimmel said. “I took it kind of personal because I want to win. To go out and rebound, I’m going to continue to do that. If it’s going to help our team, I’m going to do it.”

TRIBUTE BY FOOT: Iowa debuted bright gold new Nikes for Sunday’s opening game, and they didn’t disappoint. But there was extra incentive to the shoes as well.

On the right side of the sole of the shoe, “Team Pat” was printed, recognizing men’s coach Fran McCaffery’s son, Patrick, who had surgery to move a malignant tumor on his thyroid last week.

McCaffery and family were in attendance Sunday night in Carver.
