Patrick McCaffery, son of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery, was scheduled to have surgery today to determine if radioactive iodine is necessary in treating his cancer.

Patrick McCaffery, 14, had surgery to remove a tumor on his thyroid on March 19. Doctors discovered the tumor was malignant on March 21.

University of Iowa athletic department spokesman Matthew Weitzel said the school does not plan on releasing a statement regarding today’s surgery.
