Greg Davis on recruiting, QB speed and running backs depth

Iowa brought in three freshman running backs last season: LeShun Daniels, Akrum Wadley and Jonathan Parker.

First Big Ten West schedule could be kind to Iowa

Daniels played in seven games last season, gaining 142 yards on 36 carries. Wadley and Parker were redshirted. Now they’re competing for playing time in spring practice.

“LeShun has some (Mark) Weisman in him,” said offensive coordinator Greg Davis, making reference to Iowa’s power back and leading rusher last season. “Akrum Wadley is a guy that has done some really good things this spring, but he’s been hurt. Whether or not he can get in the mix, we’ll see, along with Jonathan Parker.”

TAG, YOU’RE IT

It’s generally assumed C.J. Beathard is more fleet of foot than fellow quarterback Jake Rudock, but offensive coordinator Greg Davis took the matter a step further.

No QB controversy: Rudock a clear No. 1

“C.J. is probably a little quicker right-to-left,” Davis said. “If you ran them in a 40, they would probably run pretty close to the same time.

“C.J. is a little shiftier and if they played tag, C.J. would probably win.”

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Davis, who was offensive coordinator at Texas from 1998 to 2010, was asked about the differences in recruiting in Iowa compared to the Lone Star State.

“To me, the biggest challenge is purely numbers,” Davis said. “I would venture to say that there were probably 330 (NCAA) Division I players signed out of the state of Texas last year. That’s not the case in the state of Iowa just because of population.

“So it’s very seldom that we left (Texas) because there were just so many players.”
